Freelance announcer Sato Kondo appeared on Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's long-running talk show "Tetsuko's Room" (TV Asahi), which aired on September 22nd. She spoke about the last words of her father, who passed away at the age of 66, and her own goals.
Her father aspired to study, but because his family was not particularly wealthy, he was unable to go to university, and it seems that he found himself at a disadvantage compared to university graduates when he found work. He was "a very positive person about life and about life itself," saying things like, "You do your best. Gifu is good, but you won't be able to succeed unless you go to Tokyo," and "The time has come for women to take the lead."
He was constantly told many things from a young age, including Saigo Takamori's motto, "Respect Heaven, Love People," and, when making excuses, "Fine words, good manners, little kindness." From his 30s, he was repeatedly admitted to and discharged from hospital, and "It was a very risky operation, but I wanted it, even if there was a 1% chance, but in the end it didn't work, and he passed away." He was 66 years old when he died.
Having heard so many different things, I braced myself for what my father would say in his final moments. "He simply said, 'Life is fun.'" I wondered if that was all he said, but the overall message that stuck with me was that life is fun.
