"The Legend of Hei" is produced by Chinese animator and animation director MTJJ and Hanmu Chunhua (HMCH) Studio. The web animation series was released on a video site in March 2011 and gained popularity, and a theatrical version was later released. The theatrical version was a hit, grossing approximately 315 million yuan (approximately 4.9 billion yen) at the box office in China.
A subtitled version was released in Japan in September 2019, and a Japanese dubbed version was released in November 2020. The dubbed version had a long run of screenings lasting about six months, and grossed over 520 million yen.
The Japanese dubbed and subtitled versions of the new animated film "The Legend of Hei 2: The Future We Want" will be released simultaneously on November 7th, and are also a hot topic. The new film is set two years after the previous film.
