It has been revealed that singer-songwriter Kenshi Yonezu has written the theme song "1991 (Nineteen Ninety-One)" for the film "5 Centimeters per Second" (directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama, scheduled for release on October 10th), starring Hokuto Matsumura. 1991 is the year the protagonists Takaki and Akari met, and it's also the year Yonezu was born. Yonezu says he was deeply impressed by director Makoto Shinkai's original anime and the novelization of the same work written by Shinkai as a teenager, and he created the new song by imagining himself as the protagonist while respecting the worldview of the original work.
This live-action film is an adaptation of the 2007 anime film of the same name directed by Makoto Shinkai. It depicts the protagonist Tono Takaki's 18-year life journey, from his youthful days as an elementary school student when he met transfer student Shinohara Akari and bonded with her, to his high school years on Tanegashima after being separated from Akari upon graduation, to his youth as he approaches 30, when he works as a systems engineer in Tokyo and feels a vague sense of stagnation and frustration.
An important part of this film is the youthful days of 1991 when the protagonist Takaki met Akari, who remains deeply engraved in his heart. The title of the theme song released this time also reflects these "days" that never fade even as we grow up.
The latest trailer featuring the theme song "1991" has also been released. The trailer begins with a monologue from the main character, Tono Takaki (played by Matsumura), who says, "When I grow up, I'm sure I'll be able to understand this world," and then goes on to depict Takaki's journey over the past 18 years, with an appearance of Akari, played by Takahata Mitsuki, also revealed.
◇Comment from Kenshi Yonezu
When I saw the film for the first time at a preview screening, I was thrilled to see that Okuyama's passion and dedication permeated every cut from beginning to end, and that I had just seen something incredible. I first encountered the original novel as a child, then met Okuyama a few years ago as a music video director, and then he became a film director himself, and I couldn't be happier that he has made such a wonderful film and that I have a place in it. Of course, the song was written specifically for the film, but perhaps influenced by the circumstances mentioned above, it also became a song that reflects on half of my life, so I chose the title 1991, which is also a keyword for the film. I hope you will enjoy it.
