NHK's history program "Rekishi Tantei" (General) will broadcast "Genius Painters Jakuchu and Okyo" from 10pm on July 23rd. Ito Jakuchu and Maruyama Okyo were two genius painters active in Kyoto during the Edo period. The only folding screen created by the two artists has been discovered and is attracting attention. The brilliantly colored, superb technique and ultimate 3D expression - what was the challenge of these geniuses?
While the paintings of Utamaro and Sharaku were sweeping the world in Edo, there were two genius painters in Kyoto who were breathing new life into Japanese painting. These were Ito Jakuchu and Maruyama Okyo. The only folding screen created by the two of them together was discovered last year and has attracted a great deal of attention.
Okyo aimed for the ultimate in 3D expression, while Jakuchu used brilliant coloring to create masterpieces. We will investigate their amazing qualities through the latest scientific research and re-creation experiments. We will walk through the city of Kyoto, the birthplace of these two genius artists, and uncover the secrets behind their creation.
