A book about the "sacred grounds" of period dramas, "Kyoto Studio Guide" (Rittosha) will be released on July 18th. Takatori Miyako, known for "The Secret History of the Killer Series: 50 Years of Confessions" (Rittosha), among others, sneaks into Kyoto Studio (Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City). The inside of the studio, which is not usually open to the public, will be revealed.
In addition to Shochiku Studios, Saga Eiga, Towa Bisho, and Takatsu Shokai, which have offices near the Daiei Dori shopping arcade, the book also visited Toei Kyoto Studios and Toei Kyoto Studio Park Park, two other important locations that support period dramas. The book also features interviews with 22 people involved, including Ishihara Oki, the cinematographer and director of the "Hissatsu" series, Seike Kazuto, the swordplay instructor for "Samurai Time Slippers," Koga Hirotaka, the costume designer, and Hano Hiroshi, the lighting designer. At the end of the book, "Kyoto, Japan's Hollywood," provides a summary of the changes in the studios from 1910 to the present.
Author Takadori commented, "This is a visual book centered on the filming studios of period dramas, something you've never seen before. There are over 450 photographs, and the majority of the pages are in color, so I think I've created a book that is fun to look at. The project was like a collaboration between two major stars at Shochiku and Toei Kyoto film studios, and we received tremendous cooperation from everyone involved in period dramas in Kyoto, which resulted in a book with rich content.
