It has been announced that Sakurazaka Hiroshi's sci-fi novel "All You Need Is Kill" will be adapted into an anime. A Hollywood movie starring Tom Cruise was released in 2014, and the manga by Takeshi Obata, known for "Death Note" and other works, also gained popularity. The anime will be directed by Akimoto Kenichiro, who has worked on "Berserk: The Golden Age Arc," "Harmony," and "Poupelle of Chimney Town," and will be produced by STUDIO4℃, which has also worked on "Tekkonkinkreet" and "Children of the Sea." A special trailer and teaser visuals have also been released.
The anime reconstructs the story from a new perspective different from the original manga and the live-action film. It focuses on the inner world of a woman named Rita, and tells the story of her loneliness and suffering, her meeting with Cage, and her growth. After an extraterrestrial invasion, Rita is trapped in a time loop in which she returns to the morning of the day she dies. No one understands her, and the seemingly endless battle eats away at her heart. Then, Cage appears in front of Rita and tells her, "I, too... am repeating today over and over again," and they have a fateful encounter.
Director Akimoto, who is working on the animation, commented, "I am honored to be involved in the animated film adaptation of this wonderful novel. In adapting this work, which has already been made into a manga and a Hollywood movie, I hope to further enhance the value of this work with the visual expression that is unique to STUDIO4℃. I also hope that viewers will find a little bit of hope for life in the midst of their repetitive daily lives."
