It has been revealed that the popular novel "Hikuidori Ushu Boro Tobigumi" by Naoki Prize-winning author Shogo Imamura will be made into a manga this spring and a TV anime in winter 2026. Based on the historical Great Fire of Meiwa, the story depicts the firemen who faced the Great Fire of Edo in a sudden reversal, and the manga by Shinobu Seguchi, who is also known for "Prisoner Riku", will be serialized in "Weekly Shonen Champion" (Akita Shoten) from this spring. The TV anime will be produced by SynergySP and will air from winter 2026. A key visual and teaser video featuring the members of the Boro Tobi Gumi have been released.
"Hikuidori Ushu Boro Tobigumi" is the debut work of Imamura, who is known for "Ikusagami" and other works, and is the first in the currently serialized "Ushu Boro Tobi Gumi" series. The story is about Matsunaga Gengo, a firefighter samurai who was once said to be the best in Edo, and his eccentric friends who gather around him to save the people of Edo from the disaster of fire.
Imamura commented, "These men who never give up will warm your hearts. I am convinced that this will be the best anime and manga based on a historical novel." The official website contains a message of about 3,000 characters from Imamura, as well as recommendations from famous people who have connections to Imamura.
In Shinjo City, Yamagata Prefecture, where the Ushu Boro Tobigumi is based, original signs and flags will be installed at Shinjo Station Yumeria from February 27th to celebrate the TV anime and manga adaptations.
