The seventh episode of the TBS Sunday Theatre drama "Diamonds Sleeping in the Sea" (Sundays at 9pm), starring actor Kamiki Ryunosuke, aired on December 8th, and the average household viewer rating (according to Video Research, Kanto region, same below) was 8.8%, up 2.1 points from the 6.7% of the previous week's episode 6. The individual viewer rating for episode 7 was also 5.6%, up from the 4.2% of the previous week.
The drama is a story of love, friendship and family set in Hashima (Battleship Island) in Nagasaki Prefecture, which developed through coal mining from the beginning of the Meiji era to the postwar high economic growth period, and in modern-day Tokyo. It is produced by the same team behind the dramas "Unnatural" and "MIU404" (same network) and the movie "The Last Mile", with screenwriter Nogi Akiko, director Tsukahara Ayuko, and producer Arai Junko.
In episode 7, the year is 1964. In the Araki household, Shinpei (Saito Takumi) and Rina's (Ikeda Elaiza) son turns one year old, and Ippei (Kunimura Jun) and Haru (Nakajima Tomoko) are especially happy. Kensho (Shimizu Hiroya) and Yuriko (Tsuchiya Tao) are also celebrating their first wedding anniversary. Amid a happy mood all around, Teppei (Kamiki) and Asako (Sugisaki Hana) have also begun a secret relationship.
One day, while Ippei was working in the mine, a gas explosion caused a fire. Shinpei and Teppei also faced the biggest crisis on Hashima Island. A day that would shake their fate began... and so the story unfolded.
