The second episode of the popular detective drama "Aibou Season 24" (TV Asahi, Wednesdays at 9pm), "Atone for it with death - The skeletons speak! Ukyo's ingenious plan," aired on October 22nd, and the final developments drew a lot of attention.
◇The following contains spoilers.
Episode 1 (aired October 15th) is the second part of "Atone for your sins with death - Suspected murder? The darkness of a living national treasure." In the first episode, suspicions emerge that death row inmate Hajime Tanoi (Takuma Sugawara) was wrongfully convicted. Ukyo (Yutaka Mizutani) infiltrates the home of storyteller Seiryu Takizawa (Tsurutaro Kataoka), the scene of the crime, as an apprentice, and discovers human bones that are quite old in the barn.
The entire situation was closely watched by the Prosecutor General, Utako Nagaoka (played by Kimiko Yo). While appearing to cooperate with the Special Investigation Unit in the investigation, she was secretly preparing for Tanoi's execution.
The Special Investigation Unit's investigation uncovers Tanoi's false accusation. With the cooperation of Miyako Yashiro (Yukie Nakama), preparations for the execution are halted just before the execution date. Garyu Oka, an abolitionist, believes the Special Investigation Unit will prove Tanoi's innocence, and confesses that his intention was to strengthen the movement to abolish the death penalty by executing an innocent person.
When Kaoru (Terawaki Yasufumi) angrily exclaims, "You're crazy!", Garyuoka replies without any apologies, "Reform requires sacrifices." However, in the end, he admits defeat to the Special Missions Unit and promises to reveal everything at a press conference. Ukyo objects, saying, "That's no good!" and tells him, "If you do that, it's the same as a terrorist's declaration of responsibility. Even if the plot fails, you'll be making your own ideology known to the world, so I won't let you get away with it! Don't do anything unnecessary, and just leave the room."
Viewers responded to this development on social media with comments such as, "I'm horrified that the prosecutor general will turn out to be a terrorist who advocates the abolition of the death penalty," "Yo Kimiko's role was even more shocking than I imagined," "Prosecutor General Garyu Oka's ideology is so strong it's disgusting," "It would be a shame for him to just leave after this episode," and "Will the prosecutor general behave himself from now on, or will he appear as an enemy?"
Some viewers also saw Ukyo as the former Chief Cabinet Secretary of the National Police Agency, Onoda Kimiaki (Kishibe Ittoku), with comments such as "Ukyo's response reminded me of Chief Cabinet Secretary Onoda," "It's similar to when the Chief Cabinet Secretary made the National Police Agency Commissioner General leave the stage," "For the first time I felt like I was the Chief Cabinet Secretary Onoda in Ukyo," and "It reminds me of the former Chief Cabinet Secretary Onoda."
