The rock band Porno Graffitti's classic song "Agehachou," released in 2001, has been chosen as the theme song for the NTV Saturday drama "Good Things and Bad Things" (starting October 11th, Saturdays at 9pm), starring Mamiya Shotaro and Araki Yuko. Okano Akihito commented, "I was honestly very surprised," while Shindo Seiichi commented, "It's an honor, as I never expected it to be announced."
The drama is a speculative mystery surrounding the suspicious death of an elementary school classmate. At a class reunion, a yearbook with the faces of six classmates blacked out is discovered in a time capsule, triggering the suspicious death of a former classmate. Takagi Masaru (Mamiya), who was the class leader and nicknamed "King" in elementary school, and Saruhashi Sonoko (Araki), a classmate nicknamed "Donoko," join forces to uncover the truth and mystery behind the classmate's death.
"Agehachou" is Porno Graffitti's sixth single, released on June 27, 2001. While it is a song that represents the Heisei era, it is still a huge hit, having reached 100 million streams in June 2023 and continuing to break new records. The powerful sound colors the drama, which is filled with the "emotion" of the Heisei era.
Mamiya said, "I couldn't believe it, the theme song is "Agehachou." I'm surprised that they'd thought of such a thing, and the fact that "Agehachou" is the theme song makes me feel nostalgic and new, but also definitely emotional. In an era before subscriptions and social media, it's incredible that they created a masterpiece that has colored an era and that the majority of the nation knows and can hum along to, and I'm very happy that we can borrow that power for this drama."
Araki commented, "The biggest surprise was, 'No way!!' I love this song, so I'm even happier that it's the theme song for a film I'm starring in."
Okano said, "'Agehatchou' was released right in the middle of the Heisei era, and is a song that has grown over time through numerous live performances. I hope that everyone will enjoy both 'Good Things and Bad Things' and 'Agehatchou' as well as the passage of time along with their memories."
Shindo said, "I'm interested to see how a song written in the Heisei era will resonate in the Reiwa era, and the lyrics of Agehachou itself have a mysterious atmosphere, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that will link. It's a song that was a hit a long time ago, so I'm really looking forward to seeing new interpretations and evaluations added to something that already has a certain reputation."
