It was revealed on September 17th that actress Rie Miyazawa will appear in the film version of "Last Man - The Blind Investigator" (directed by Shunichi Hirano, scheduled for release in December 2025), based on the drama series "Last Man - The Blind Investigator" starring Masaharu Fukuyama, which aired on TBS's "Sunday Theatre" slot (Sundays at 9pm) in April 2023. She will play Nagisa Ivanova, Minami's (Fukuyama) first love, who holds the key to the case.
The screenplay for "Last Man: The Blind Investigator" was written by Tsutomu Kuroiwa. It is a thrilling drama in which Hiromi Minami, a blind FBI special agent who is a people-pleaser, played by Fukuyama, and Shintaro Godo, a detective who will stop at nothing to arrest the criminal, played by Yo Oizumi, team up to tackle difficult cases.
The protagonist, Minami Hiromi, lost sight in both eyes due to an accident in the past, but is now a highly skilled special agent at the FBI, known as "the last man" who always solves cases and has solved numerous cases. Minami, who has come from the United States, is assigned to attend to him by the lone detective Godo Shintaro. The two, with different titles and personalities, gradually join forces to become an "invincible buddy" who solve cases. Towards the end of the drama, the past connection between Minami and Shintaro is revealed, and the shocking truth is revealed: the two are actually brothers.
Miyazawa plays Nagisa, Minami's first love, whom she met in the United States during her university days. Regarding the casting, producer Higashinaka Keigo said, "Nagisa was the protagonist Minami's first love, and he is irreplaceable to the Minami of today. In the TV series, we didn't delve deeply into Minami's background, such as what kind of life he led when he was young after going to America. Fukuyama also had the idea to create a story in the sequel that would give a glimpse into Minami's past, and as we built the plot of the film around that, the presence of Minami's first love grew increasingly important. When we were looking for someone who could deliver complex acting and a presence that would convey the unseen time with Minami, and Nagisa's life afterwards, we thought Miyazawa was the only one who could do it, so we offered her the role, even though we thought it would be a long shot."
Miyazawa commented on her participation in this film, "I was nervous and anxious about taking part in a series that is loved by so many people, but I was drawn to the charm of Fukuyama-san and Oizumi-san's powerful buddy-like relationship, so I decided to take part." She also said, "When I read the script for the first time, I was very excited about the epic-scale action. I also think the deep love and conflict that emerges from it is a highlight. I hope everyone will enjoy it on the big screen."
The film begins two years after Minami (Fukuyama) returns to the United States after completing his training. Minami visits Japan again, and Shintaro (Oizumi) is summoned by him and heads to Hokkaido to investigate a certain case. There, he meets Minami's first love, Nagisa Ivanova (Rie Miyazawa). In order to protect Nagisa, who has become embroiled in an incident and is being pursued by a mysterious organization, the invincible buddy duo once again team up to tackle the case with a joint team from the FBI, CIA, and Hokkaido Prefectural Police. A conspiracy that will shake the world is entangled... and so the story unfolds.
