On May 15th, actress Yo Yoshida: 2 different kimono outfits in Cannes, France appeared with her co-stars from the film "Distant Mountain Light" (directed by Ishikawa Kei, to be released on September 5th) at the photocall, official screening, press conference and red carpet of the 78th Cannes International Film Festival in Cannes, France. She showed off two unique kimono looks, one with a white background and one with a black background.
At the photo call and official screening, she wore a white kimono with a red haori coat, a color that symbolizes Japan. She also wore pearl earrings and a ring that were a keepsake from her mother, and red lace gloves to create a modern look.
On the red carpet, she wore a black antique kimono featuring the striking image of a crane with its wings spread wide, which she chose with the hope that "the film would take flight around the world." She paired it with Maison Margiela tabi boots, and accented the look with a choker and gloves.
In an interview after the screening, Yoshida said, "I could feel everyone's emotion," and commented on the standing ovation, "I felt that it was a moment when the efforts of all the staff and cast who worked on this film were rewarded."
She also said that she "cried" at the climax, and added, "I think that watching this movie will encourage many women who want to live their own lives."
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro. Set in Nagasaki in the 1950s and the UK in the 1980s, it is a human mystery that uncovers the secrets of the memories of Etsuko (Suzu Hirose), a woman who experienced the atomic bomb. It was officially entered in the "Un Certain Regard" category at the festival. Yoshida played the role of Etsuko in the 1980s.
