Keisuke Kuwata of the popular band Southern All Stars appeared on the TBS variety show Sunday First Time I Hear It, which aired on April 13th. He revealed the story behind the creation of the 1990 hit song "Manatsu no Kajitsu."
"Manatsu no Kajitsu" is the theme song for the movie "Inamura Jane" (1990), which was Kuwata's first directorial work and music director. The program introduced it as a song he wrote during a time when he was confused and struggling with filmmaking, something he was not used to.
Kuwata recalled his feelings at the time, saying, "I was about 33 years old at the time. I was among the film staff, but it was a bit of a different industry and culture. I said, 'Let's make a film,' but I didn't really think about it that deeply... To be honest, I was probably underestimating it. When we were making the film, there were some sad moments. I thought the film might not be good, or maybe the staff didn't like me." He continued, "I think when you have those kinds of negative 'weaknesses,' those feelings just come out unconsciously."
It was explained that Kuwata's undirected emotions at the time linked with the lyrics expressing the sadness of heartbreak, making the song a masterpiece that touches the hearts of all who listen.
