In the seventh episode, Nobu's (Yuzuna Nagase) grandfather, Kamaji ( Kotaro Yoshida), who is the breadwinner of the Asada family, injures his arm at work and is unable to work for three months. Her mother, Hatako (Noriko Eguchi), loses her job as a homemaker, and Hatako and her grandmother, Kura (Miyoko Asada), become increasingly anxious as they peer into the rice bin.
Nobu tries to think of a way to help the Asada family, and comes up with the idea of getting Kusakichi to bake bread at the Asada house and selling it to make money. Nobu takes Kusakichi to the house, but Kamaji is strongly opposed, and Kusakichi gives up and leaves.
Unable to give up, Nobu chases after Kusakichi, who is leaving town, with Taka (Kimura Yuuki), and at the station she desperately tries to persuade him, saying, "Please! I'll persuade Kamajii. Yam-onchan's Anpan have the power to cheer up sad people and make them smile."
However, Kusakichi says, "Listen, life never goes the way you want it to," and passes through the ticket gate. As Nobu and Taka sit dejectedly on a bench at the station, Kusakichi, who was supposed to have boarded the train, appears and instructs, "Call the dango shop. Without red bean paste, it's not an Anpan!" Kusakichi demands, "But there is a condition. I'll take 60% of the sales." Nobu readily accepts, and he says, "The deal is done, you idiot! If I take 60%, you won't get any money." "Well, I guess. Just once for now. I can't promise anything after that. Got it?" and promises to make an Anpan.
