Entertainer Dave Spector and his wife Kyoko Spector appeared on Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's long-running talk show "Tetsuko's Room" (TV Asahi) on March 5th. Kyoko revealed for the first time that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer last year and had undergone surgery to remove both breasts.
"I was lying down in bed when I was sleeping. I felt a sharp pain in my right side. So I thought it was cancer," Kyoko recalled. When she was examined at the hospital, it was discovered that the cancer on the right was stage 2 and the cancer on the left was stage 0, and had just developed. Kyoko revealed her feelings at the time, saying, "Normally, when you're told you have cancer, you're shocked. But then I thought, 'Oh, thank goodness.' I was glad to know. I didn't feel sad or anything like that."
"The doctor asked me, 'What do you want to do?' and I said, 'Just remove them,' and they removed both. I feel relieved," said Kyoko with a smile. "The doctor advised me to stay (in the hospital) for about a week, but I said, 'It's boring, so please let me go home early,' and left the hospital on the fifth day."
On the day of her discharge, Dave greeted her in a doctor costume. "I bought it online in advance and prepared it for her. I wanted to surprise her. I don't think it's normal to prank someone who's been discharged from the hospital, but I thought she'd be happy," Dave recalled.
When asked by Tetsuko what the couple would like to do in the future, Dave replied, "Because of my illness, rather than wanting to do something in particular, I just love ordinary days. We don't have any special goals or travel plans. I think we're happier if we don't have any expectations. As long as we stay healthy, that's enough for me."
A handwritten birthday card that Dave sent on his birthday this year was also introduced.
