Actor Hideki Takahashi and his wife Mieko appeared on Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's long-running talk show "Tetsuko's Room" (TV Asahi) on February 3rd. They talked about the two marital disputes they had in the 50 years since they got married in 1974.
Their first fight was in their first year of marriage. An old video was shown of him talking about the reason behind it. In it, he said that his wife cooked lots of food and he ate everything because he had been taught by his parents to eat everything that was served to him. The next day he would check and see that another dish had been added. And when he ate that, another dish would be added the next day. "We had only recently become a married couple, so we didn't talk about eating too much or eating a lot. One time I mentioned that the portions were a bit too much, and my wife thought that it wasn't enough (or so I thought). I realized that we needed to talk."
Looking back on those days in the studio, Takahashi said, "Every morning, we would have breakfast like at a first-class inn," to which Mieko added, "We would go shopping at the market and buy so many ingredients that I would get tendonitis. We were always cooking hotpot." Takahashi praised her, saying, "You were in the kitchen all day," and explained, "We were both reserved and didn't say anything to each other, so that's what started our fight in the first year."
The second time the couple fought was in their 11th year of marriage, over their children's education. "We haven't had another fight since then," Takahashi said.
