It has been revealed that the cumulative box office revenue of the sixth season of the TV anime "GeGeGe no Kitaro," based on the manga by the late Shigeru Mizuki, and the "real version," has exceeded 3 billion yen. The cumulative audience has exceeded 2.08 million people. "Kitaro: The Birth of GeGeGe No Mystery" was released in November 2023, and attracted an audience of approximately 1.95 million people and generated box office revenue of approximately 2.79 billion yen. The "real version," which retakes and re-dubs 327 cuts, was released on October 4th and has become a hit.

The "real version" is "the horror story that the production team originally envisioned," and revives the "horror effects" that were envisioned in the storyboard. "The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe" was rated PG12 (those under 12 years of age require parental or guardian advice and guidance), but the real version is rated R15+ (not suitable for those under 15 years of age).

"The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe" was released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mizuki's birth. This is the first theatrical version of "GeGeGe no Kitaro" to be released in 15 years since "GeGeGe no Kitaro: Japan Explodes!!," which was released in December 2008 as the theatrical version of the fifth series of the TV anime. Kitaro's father (formerly Medama Oyaji) and Mizuki are the main characters, and this is the first time that "the story of Kitaro's fathers" has been told. It also attracted attention when it was selected for the Best Animation Award at the 47th Japan Academy Awards.
