The drama "Black Pean Season 2," starring Kazunari Ninomiya, currently airing on TBS's "Sunday Theater" slot (Sundays at 9 p.m.), will finally reach its final episode (episode 10) on September 15th (extended by 25 minutes). In the preview, Ninomiya's character, Yukihiko Amagi, is seen walking along the beach, muttering, "I'll never see her again." What will happen at the end? We asked producer Hidenori Iyoda.

◇The final episode will be set in Australia again

The original work is "Blaze Scalpel 1990" and "Surijie Center 1991" (Kodansha Bunko) by Takeru Kaido, known for the "Team Batista's Glory" series. In season 1, Ninomiya plays Seijiro Tokai, a genius surgeon known as the "devil of the operating room," and in season 2, he plays Yukihiko Amagi, a world-renowned expert in coronary artery bypass surgery and a money-grubbing man known as the "Diable (devil)." In episode 8 of season 2, it was revealed that the two were twins.

In the final episode, Amagi (Ninomiya) performs a public operation on Tokunaga (Inoue Hajime), a patient who holds the secret of the Black Pean. Tokunaga develops malignant hyperthermia during the operation. This coincides with the nightmare of his mother's death under the knife, and Amagi decides to perform an extremely risky operation. Takashina (Koizumi Kotaro) supports him.

Shingyoji (Ishizaka Koji), the president of the Sakuranomiya City Medical Association, who was also at the venue, advises Amagi to stop the operation. However, Saeki (Uchino Masaaki), the hospital director, urges him to continue the operation and also tells Amagi the true purpose of establishing a new hospital.

At the same time, at Tojo University, Yui (Horikoshi Reika) develops acute mitral regurgitation. In an extremely dangerous condition, Sera (Takeuchi Ryoma) is assisted by Kurosaki (Hashimoto Satoshi) and performs an emergency operation using Snipe. However, an unexpected accident occurs.

Two simultaneous operations were carried out under the worst possible circumstances. Furthermore, the truth surrounding the sealed Direct Anastomosis and the meaning of the broken Black Pean promise are revealed. The story then shifts to Australia once again... and so on.

◇Amagi is "un-Japanese"

Season 2 is set up with a setting that Tokai and Amagi are identical twins, which is not in the original work, and in episode 8 it is revealed that they are separated twins. This setting was suggested by the original author, Kaido, and it was this that helped create Amagi's character.

Iyoda said, "Basically, I imagined Amagi Yukihiko as he is in the original work, but since there is no relationship with Tokai in the original work, how would Ninomiya play him? As we were making the arrangements, we all consulted together about his hairstyle, clothing, way of speaking, and so on."

As in the original work, Amagi is a character who has lived abroad for a long time. Amagi's appearance was also created to give a sense of attention to detail that is not found in Japanese people.

"As for Amagi, he takes care of his appearance and hobbies, and he also does his job well. That's not Japanese, but it's cool. As one symbol of that, he is particular about the clothes he wears, and his hairstyle is un-Japanese to show his way of life."

Amagi was created as a character who thinks in a non-Japanese way, showing particular attention to the design of the new hospital building that was entrusted to him.

◇ Will there be a sequel? "It would be great to have such an opportunity."

As for Amagi's character, the setting is quite different from the original, but the main story is "closely supervised by the original author, Kaido-sensei. Kaido-sensei gave me ideas for the main story, and I followed those ideas." Therefore, the events and flow of the story largely follow the original.

Iyoda then commented on the ending, "I hope that viewers can feel the same way I felt when reading the original work in the drama. I made it with the hope that the feelings I had when I read it were portrayed exactly as they were in the drama. I also hope that viewers can enjoy both the original elements that Kaido-sensei gave us, such as Amagi."

Finally, Season 2 will be the final episode, but is there a possibility of a sequel?

"It's not that we haven't talked about it on set, but I'm not sure how realistic it will be... Before that, I don't know if Kaido-sensei will give the OK, and it's not like anything concrete is moving forward," she said, remaining positive, "For me, it's a happiness to be able to stay with a character I've spent time with for a long time, and I hope to have such an opportunity, so I would definitely like to."
