The latest animated film in the popular "Tom and Jerry" series, "Tom and Jerry: The Magic Compass of Time" (distributed by Clockworks), will be released on May 29th. A scene from the film in which the mischievous Tom transforms into a B-boy and performs a rap, with Jerry bouncing along to the upbeat rhymes, was released on May 23rd.
"Tom and Jerry" is a slapstick comedy short animated series featuring the world's most famous cat, Tom, and mouse, Jerry, as they engage in all sorts of chases in each episode. It celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2025.
In the latest movie, Tom and Jerry are playing their usual game of chase in a museum when they accidentally activate an ancient artifact on display, the "Star Compass," and are transported through time in a dazzling light. They arrive in the "Golden City," a different world thousands of years in the past, inhabited by a phoenix sage and unique guardian beasts. There, they find themselves in danger from the evil Rat King, who seeks to conquer the world with the power of the compass. In order to return to their own time, Tom and Jerry call a temporary truce and embark on a grand adventure as a team in the face of an unprecedented crisis...and that's the story.
The newly released footage shows Tom, dressed in a B-boy style, performing a lively rap at a welcome banquet.
Tom and Jerry are transported through time to the Golden City. The residents, especially those who see Tom descending from the heavens like a god, begin to worship him as the "Cat God." Tom and Jerry, who suddenly appear from another world, bring with them the "Star Compass," a treasure of the Golden City that has been missing for many years. This prompts the Phoenix Hermit (voiced by Takuya Sato) and Phoenix Feeny (voiced by Yohei Tadano) to devise a plan to retrieve the Star Compass.
The Phoenix Sage plans a welcome feast and invites Tom. Tom accepts the invitation and, upon arriving at the table laden with food alongside the Phoenix Sage and his guardian beasts, he immediately devours the meal. Overwhelmed by the warm welcome, Tom suddenly transforms into a B-boy to express his joy.
Following the pleasant sound of cymbals, English rap rang out, and to the lighthearted rhythm of "YOYO, everyone pay attention," Tom performed breakdancing and showcased his auspicious paper-cutting art, doing whatever he pleased and having a blast.
When Jerry, who had been acting separately, joined them, their mischievous behavior intensified, and they started messing with Jerry using the title logo and tableware. Furthermore, they adorned the star compass they were wearing around their neck as a flashy necklace, and transformed into cool B-boys by using lemons from the table as sunglasses!
Seeing Tom getting carried away, Jerry plays a prank on him by having the Phoenix Sage bite Tom's tail, but Tom's momentum is unstoppable. To the rhythm of upbeat rap music, he rolls Jerry up and bounces him around like a basketball, and even dribbles and shoots him, getting his revenge.
Seeing this, the Phoenix Immortal and the guardian beasts get into the spirit and happily perform their own original dance. There is also a scene where Tom makes a heart shape to appeal to Jade (voiced by Yurika Kubo), a Peking Opera actor and the Phoenix Immortal's top disciple.
The video ends with Tom riding on the Phoenix Immortal's float, excitedly shouting, "Let's go, everyone in the Golden City!", capturing a scene from the film that conveys the chaotic and fun-filled plot.
Furthermore, to commemorate the release, a gift will be distributed to moviegoers. From May 29th to June 4th, the first week of release, a "Memories of the Golden City" postcard set will be distributed, and from June 5th to 11th, the second week of release, a "Time-Traveling Slapstick" sticker will be distributed. Both items are available in limited quantities. Please refer to the official website for participating theaters.
