The sequel to Mari Yamazaki's popular manga "Thermae Romae," titled "Thermae Romae 2," resumed serialization on May 19th on Shueisha's manga app "Shonen Jump+." This marks the return of the series after approximately eight months, since the release of episode 13 on September 2nd, 2025.
To commemorate the resumption of the series, all chapters of the previous work, "Thermae Romae," will be released for free sequentially on "Shonen Jump+." Starting May 19th, all chapters except the first will be available for a fee, and the free release range will change weekly, with the final chapter being released for free in stages.
The sequel, "Thermae Romae 2," depicts the story of Lucius, the protagonist, 20 years after the conclusion of the original "Thermae Romae." In the Roman Empire in 158 AD, Lucius, a bathhouse architect who has reached the age of 60, is troubled by various issues, and then "that phenomenon" occurs again... The story also depicts what happened to Lucius and his Japanese wife, Satsuki, the fate of their child, and Lucius's mission in the Roman Empire 20 years later.
"Thermae Romae" is a comedy manga serialized in "Monthly Comic Beam" (KADOKAWA) from 2008 to 2013. Lucius Modestus, an ancient Roman bathhouse architect, somehow time-slips to modern Japanese public baths, hot springs, and bathtubs, where he learns about things like fruit milk after bathing, showers, exfoliating towels, and shampoo hats, and recreates them in Rome, gaining fame in the process. In 2010, it won both the "Manga Taisho 2010" and the "14th Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize Short Story Award." The comics have sold over 9 million copies in total.
It was adapted into an anime television series in 2012 and a live-action film in 2014. In 2022, a new anime series, "Thermae Romae, " was produced.
