It was announced on May 15th at the "Gundam Conference SPRING 2026" streamed on YouTube that new footage for "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing," a popular anime series from the "Gundam" franchise, will be produced. This will be part of the "Gundam 50th Anniversary Project." Last year, "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing" celebrated its 30th anniversary, and numerous commemorative projects garnered significant attention. The overwhelming response to these 30th-anniversary projects appears to have led to the production of this new footage.
◇ The popularity of "Gundam Wing" overseas
"Mobile Suit Gundam Wing" aired from 1995 to 1996 as the second installment of the "Alternative Series." It was also the first Gundam series to be broadcast extensively in the United States, and it enjoys high popularity overseas. In the US, it began airing on Cartoon Network in March 2000 and garnered enthusiastic support, mainly from teenagers. As a result, many fans in the US consider "Gundam Wing" to be the "First Gundam."
Last year, the 30th-anniversary video, "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing -Operation 30th-," was unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) event held in San Diego, USA. In the "Worldwide 'Gundam' General Election 2025" voting project, Wing Gundam Zero from "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz" ranked 2nd in the worldwide rankings. It also performed exceptionally well, taking first place in the English and Traditional Chinese (Taiwan) rankings.
The product line also seems to have been successful, with the "GUNDAM FIX FIGURATION METAL COMPOSITE Wing Gundam Zero Cloaked Custom" figure (Bandai Spirits), featuring the new mobile suit Wing Gundam Zero Cloaked Custom that appeared in the 30th anniversary video, selling out instantly.
Last December, the "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing 30th Anniversary Dinner Show -Operation Reunion-," the first-ever dinner show for the "Gundam" series, was held at The Prince Park Tower Tokyo Ballroom (Minato-ku, Tokyo), which also generated a lot of buzz.
◇The new footage is "properly long."
At the "Gundam Conference SPRING 2026,"Naohiro Ogata, director of Bandai Namco Filmworks and head of the Gundam series' video business, explained the background to the creation of the new video, saying, "We received messages from many people around the world saying, 'We want to see more.'" It seems that the great response to the 30th-anniversary project both domestically and internationally spurred the production of the new video.
Since it was only announced that it would be new footage, it's still unclear whether it will be a short film, a theatrical release, or a TV series. While Ogata avoided giving a clear answer by saying, "I can't say the medium yet," he did reveal that it would be "properly long." As the 30th-anniversary video was only about 3 minutes long, the statement that it would be "properly long" has raised fans' expectations.
The "Gundam 50th Anniversary Project" also announced a remaster of the first installment of the series, "Mobile Suit Gundam," which is the origin of the franchise. Mr. Ogata also said, "We are preparing other new Gundam projects, so please look forward to them," so we should keep an eye out for future announcements. (Manami Anima/MANTANWEB)
