The husband-and-wife duo "Humbert Humbert" appeared on Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's long-running talk show "Tetsuko's Room" (TV Asahi) on Getsuku. The two, who performed the theme song "Warattari Korondari" for the NHK Asadora drama "Bakebake," revealed how they started their husband-and-wife duo.
Humbert Humbert is celebrating its 28th anniversary this year. In 1998, husband Yoshinari Sato started a band with his university friends. Although he and his wife, Yuho, attended different universities, they met at a school festival through a mutual friend. Yuho had never even taken lessons in an instrument before, but she joined the band at Yoshinari's invitation and began her musical activities for the first time.
At the time, they were a six-member band. Yoshinari recalls with a laugh, "I wanted to form a band for me to sing in, so I asked Yuho if she would do backing vocals. But the other four said, 'It would be better if Yuho sang,' and before I knew it, Yuho was the one singing."
Those four all got jobs as soon as they graduated from university. Since Yuho and Yoshinari were the only ones left, they ended up adopting their own style.
Humbert Humbert made their first appearance on Kohaku Uta Gassen last New Year's Eve with their song "Waratta Korondari". Yuho said, "We never imagined that we would appear on Kohaku. We had joked about it before, saying, 'What would we do if we were chosen to appear on Kohaku?'"
