A screening of the fifth chapter, "The Heated Galactic War," of " Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199, " the latest installment in the remake series of the popular anime " Space Battleship Yamato ," was held on March 17th at Shinjuku Piccadilly (Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo) with a special "Yamato Talk Screening <Cinematography Edition>." In addition to the general director Harutoshi Fukui, director Naomichi Yamato, screenwriter Hideki Oka, and voice actress Eriko Nakamura (who plays Mikage Kiryu), cinematographer Daisuke Horino appeared as a guest, and the craftsmanship of the cinematography for "Yamato 3199" was introduced. When Horino asked, "How is the script for '3199' created?", Fukui began by saying, "There's a remake and a reboot, but what's the difference...?"
" Space Battleship Yamato" is a beloved masterpiece that has been enjoyed for over half a century. It significantly changed the history of Japanese animation. "Yamato 3199" is a reinterpretation and reconstruction of "Be Forever Yamato" and "Space Battleship Yamato III."
Fukui said, "I'm starting to think it might be a reboot. We're focusing on reconstructing it while making the most of the worldview and each character. We'll definitely include the memorable scenes and mechs. We'll take any detours to get there."
The remake series began with "Space Battleship Yamato 2199," a remake of the first film, which was screened in theaters and broadcast on television from 2012 to 2014. Its sequel, "2202," was screened in theaters and on television from 2017 to 2019. The two-part "2205" was screened in theaters in 2021 and 2022.
Oka revealed his thoughts, saying, "It all started with Yutaka Izubuchi's '2199.' '2199' revolutionized many things. Inspired by the wonderful inventions of '2199,' we have been desperately thinking about it in our own way. Some of it is intuitive, but we must also firmly inherit the rules and nuances of '2199.'"
"Yamato 3199" consists of seven chapters, and the sixth chapter, "The Azure Labyrinth," will be screened from June 26th.
