"TV Preview Room" is a series where journalists review TV programs of various genres, from dramas to documentaries, variety shows, and anime, before they are broadcast. This time, we will be looking at the all-new special drama "Last Man - The Blind Investigator - FAKE/TRUTH" (TBS, December 28th, 9pm).
"The Last Man: The Blind Investigator" is a TV drama series that aired on TBS in April 2023. It stars Hiromi Minami, a blind FBI special agent who is a people-pleaser, played by Masaharu Fukuyama, and Shintaro Godo, a detective who will stop at nothing to arrest the culprit, played by Yo Oizumi, as they team up to tackle difficult cases.
The special drama begins in 2023, immediately following the series. Minami (Fukuyama) and Shintaro (Oizumi) are playing the piano at a New York night lounge, which is the site of transactions for the international criminal organization "Vaffa." Shintaro follows Minami to the US, where he undergoes six months of training at the FBI with Minami, enjoying fulfilling days as the "strongest buddy." After completing his training, Shintaro returns to Japan.
In 2025, Minami returns to Japan to appear on a television program. The television studio she visits is seized by an armed group. The perpetrators take Minami, along with the Caster Harima Misaki (Wakana Matsumoto), who was appearing on the live broadcast, and Prime Minister Gonohashi Yoshimi (Kotaro Yoshida), hostage, threatening to detonate a bomb if the broadcast is stopped, and demanding a $1 billion ransom for the Prime Minister. Upon learning that Minami has been held captive, Shintaro heads to the studio to rescue Minami and the other hostages, only to find that Sakura (Yoshida Yo), a detective and chief inspector of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigative Division, who was serving as Minami's attendant, is hiding there...
The special drama is a continuation of the story of the serial drama. Filming also took place in New York, USA, and there are scenes in which Minami and Shintaro, the "strongest buddy," are active worldwide, creating a grand story that far exceeds the scale of a terrestrial TV drama. The story is also connected to the currently released "The Last Man -FIRST LOVE-" (directed by Hirano Shunichi), allowing viewers to enjoy the world of "The Last Man" from multiple angles through both the drama and the movie.
The special drama is over two hours long (including commercials), the same length as a movie, but with its fast-paced plot development, you won't want to miss a single moment. The title "FAKE/TRUTH" is the key word, and you'll be on the edge of your seat as you try to decide what is true and what is a lie, with a series of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat as deception and betrayal link up.
Furthermore, the film is packed with gunfights and action that will have you on the edge of your seat, thinking, "This is Japan, is this okay?", as well as social satire in the age of social media, which left you feeling refreshed and thought-provoking after watching it.
At the end of 2025, "The Last Mans" will take on "The Worst Two Days in History"! Immerse yourself in the world of "The Last Man" along with the film. (Naoko Hosoda/MANTAN)
