The film version of Chainsaw Man: Reze, a sequel to the TV anime Chainsaw Man Man, based on Tatsuki Fujimoto 's popular manga, was released in 421 theaters nationwide on September 19th, and it has been revealed that the film's box office revenue has exceeded 1.52 billion yen in just four days since its release. The number of viewers was approximately 986,000.
To commemorate the release of the film, a special conversation between Fujimoto, the original author, and Kenshi Yonezu, who wrote the theme song "IRIS OUT" and the ending theme "JANE DOE," was posted on YouTube. Yonezu also wrote the opening theme for the TV series. Yonezu, who was an avid fan of Fujimoto's work even before the TV series aired, said, "I also wanted to be a manga artist when I was a child, so I was really inspired by the fact that someone almost the same age as me was drawing such shocking things. It's a different genre from music, but I remember feeling like I couldn't let him beat me, and that I had to work hard too."
Meanwhile, Fujimoto, who has been a big fan of Yonezu's music since he was a student, reiterated his thoughts on the TV series' opening theme "Chainsaw Man Man,' I wondered if it might end up being too explanatory... but Yonezu is good at picking out the parts that he picked up well, and there are some carefree parts in 'KICK BACK' in a good way. I thought it turned out to be a really good song."
In the second half of the interview, the conversation covered a wide range of topics, including behind-the-scenes stories about the production of the film's theme song "IRIS OUT" and the ending theme "JANE DOE" by Yonezu and Hikaru Utada, as well as Fujimoto's thoughts on the character Reze, the manga, books and movies he read as a child, and what inspired him to start his activities.
The "Reze" arc, which also appeared at the end of the TV anime series that aired from October to December 2022, tells the story of Reze and the main character, Denji, who became a hot topic. While Denji is excited about a date with his crush, Makima, he takes shelter from the rain and meets Reze, a young girl who works at a cafe. The episode will be directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, who served as the action director for the TV anime, and produced by MAPPA.
"Chainsaw Man" is a dark hero action story that follows Denji, a boy possessed by a demon, as he works as a devil hunter. Part 1 was serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha) from December 2018 to December 2020. Part 2 has been serialized on Shueisha's manga app "Shonen Jump +" since July 2022. The total number of copies of the comics published has exceeded 30 million.
