Mamoru Hosoda's latest film "Scarlet" selected for the Venice International Film Festival

It has been announced that " Scarlet " (released November 21st), the first new animated film in about four years by director Mamoru Hosoda, known for "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" and " Summer Wars ", has been selected for the Out of Competition section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, one of the world's three major film festivals. This is the first time that Director Hosoda's work has been selected for the festival. Director Hosoda's previous works include " Summer Wars" which was selected for the Berlin International Film Festival in 2010, and "The Dragon and the Freckled Princess" which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2021 ("Mirai" was selected for Director's Fortnight in 2018), meaning that with this Venice International Film Festival, he has been selected for all three of the world's major international film festivals.

Regarding his first selection at the Venice International Film Festival, Director Hosoda commented, "I am truly honored that ' Scarlet' has been invited to the prestigious 82nd Venice International Film Festival. Right now, as we witness tragic conflicts all over the world, I believe that finding love and living together hand in hand will lead to affirming our future, and I would like to share this new work with people all over the world."

It was also announced that the film has been selected for the Special Presentations category at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The theme of the latest film is "living," and Director Hosoda wrote the original story and script. After her father was killed and her revenge failed, Scarlett once again attempts to exact revenge on her nemesis in the Land of the Dead. The Land of the Dead is a place where if Scarlett does not exact revenge on her nemesis and reach the "endless place," she will become nothing and disappear, and so she embarks on an endless journey of revenge. Ashida Mana voices Scarlett, and actor Masaki Okada voices the modern-day Japanese nurse, Hijiri, who travels with Scarlett. Following its release in Japan, the film will be released in the US on December 12th.
