It has been announced that a completely new anime adaptation of Hojo Tsukasa's popular manga Cat's Eye, which was popular mainly in the 1980s, will be exclusively streamed on Disney+ from September. The main cast has also been announced, with voice actors Mikako Komatsu, Ami Koshimizu, and Yumiri Hanamori playing the three beautiful sisters who own the Cat's Eye Cafe. Komatsu will play the second daughter, Kisugi Hitomi, Koshimizu will play the eldest daughter, Kisugi Rei, and Hanamori will play the third daughter, Kisugi Ai. It was also announced that Takuya Sato will play detective Utsumi Toshio. Toshio is a detective at Inunaki Police Station, and while he pursues the phantom thief Cat's Eye, he also develops a romantic relationship with Hitomi.
Two teaser visuals have been released: one for "day" and one for "night," which shows the three sisters smiling at Cafe Cat's Eye, and the other showing them standing with Rin as the Cat's Eye thief with a cityscape behind them.
The trailer was also released on YouTube. Set in the streets of Tokyo overlooking the Skytree, the video begins with a tense countdown just before the warning letter is due to arrive, and shows the three sisters making a splendid appearance as the Cat's Eye thief, and Toshio continuing to pursue the Cat's Eye thief.
Komatsu, who plays Hitomi, commented, "The classic that everyone knows, 'Cat's Eye', has been made into a new anime...!! I'm not from the generation that watched it when it was first released, but of course I knew the work, and I can even hum the theme song, it has become so ingrained in me with the times... I really feel the greatness of the work. The new Cat's Eye is a timeless romantic comedy, but I think it is a work that allows you to enjoy the brilliant tactics and action that are only appropriate for the current era. I hope everyone will be captivated by the three sisters who have been revived in the Reiwa era...!"
Koshimizu, who plays the role of Rui, said, "I am honored but also feel a lot of pressure to be playing the role of Rui. I am from the generation that watched the reruns of "Cat's Eye" as a child, and I admired how cool the characters were in "Cat's Eye," and Toshio's wit brought so many smiles to my face. I will do my best to play the role in a way that fits the style of the series, so I hope you will all support me."
Hanamori, who plays Ai, said, "When I was little, my mother used to hum 'Cat's Eye', and I never thought that one day I would become one of the mysterious girls...! I will do my best to portray Ai, who is as carefree and flexible as a cat, and impossible to take your eyes off of. I hope you will all enjoy the role!"
Sato, who plays Toshio, said, "When I was little, the manga 'Cat's Eye' was always close to me, and it was a manga I longed to read only when I became a big brother. When I encountered 'Cat's Eye' through the anime later in life, it not only charmed me with its sexy, stylish, and slightly adult world, but I also loved its witty exchanges. I never dreamed that the day would come when I would be running around shouting, 'Wait! Cats!' The recording site for the new animated version of 'Cat's Eye' is filled with respect for the work and enthusiasm. I will do my best as a voice actor to make it enjoyable not only for everyone who has loved the work for a long time, but also for those who are coming into contact with 'Cat's Eye' in the Reiwa era through this anime. Please look forward to it!"
The popular manga was serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha) from 1981 to 1984. The story is about three beautiful sisters, Hitomi, Rui, and Ai, who own the cafe Cat's Eye, and coolly run through the night as phantom thieves, causing a stir in the world. It also depicts splendid action and a thrilling romance with a detective.
A TV anime series was broadcast from 1983 to 1985, and it will be the first time in about 40 years that the series will be adapted into an anime series again. In the new anime, Ado will cover the theme song "CAT'S EYE" sung by Anri.
