On the day of the election for hospital director, Rikuro appealed to the doctors, saying, "In order to protect Uotora General Hospital, I propose necessary revisions. We will concentrate our limited human resources in departments where expertise and efficiency can be combined, such as operating rooms, perioperative management, and health checkup centers. Medical care cannot be sustained by ideals alone." He declared, "You may call me cold-hearted, but I will still take responsibility and choose this path," drawing applause from the audience.
When the moderator asked, "Do you have any questions? Let's move on to the next question," Kojiro raised his hand. Rikuro looked surprised at his son's action.
Given the opportunity to speak, Kojiro began by saying, "Dr. Togo has proposed downsizing the pediatrics department and abolishing the general medicine department as part of this policy." Rikuro tried to take the initiative by saying, "Do you know the annual deficit of the pediatrics department? Hospitals are not charities," but Kojiro remained undeterred, saying, "I know that. But no matter how aging progresses, there are still children."
Kojiro further told his father, "There are many wonderful things about Japan's medical system. But the system is designed to protect as many people as possible. What about those who fall through the cracks? Can we just pretend they don't exist? Medical care cannot be sustained by kindness alone. That's a fact. But if we lost kindness, we wouldn't be able to be doctors."
On social media, the incident became a hot topic, with comments such as, "Wow, Professor Kojiro has jumped on the dad," "Well said, Kojiro," "It was cool how Professor Kojiro spoke so directly to his father," and "Mackenyu is so cool."
