It has been announced that the TV anime "Otherworldly Munchkin: Let's Speedrun the Dungeon with Only 1 HP!", based on the manga by Yuu Shimizu, who is known for the popular light novels "Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance" and "Seiken Gakuin no Mahou Tsukai", will begin airing in October. This is a fantasy about reincarnation in another world based on the worldview of TRPG (table-talk RPG), and it has been announced that voice actor Kazuki Ura will play the main character, Yukito Kirihara, who searches for his sister in the other world and throws himself into a harsh battle.
In addition to Ura, it has been revealed that the main cast will include Kana Yuki as Yukito's companion Charlotte R. Brownia, Yui Ishikawa as Rumiria Sherwood, and Kaori Maeda as Riverna Dark.
The key visual showing Yukito and his party gathered together and the first promotional video have been released, depicting Yukito sealing away his inherent kindness and preparing to survive as a coward (munchkin) in a harsh alternate world.
Ura commented, "Yukito is smart, and uses all sorts of strategies to challenge the enemy with only 1 HP. His recklessness is both cool and entertaining...I hope you enjoy watching everyone being manipulated by Yukito! The story is based on a TRPG, but I think it's designed in such a way that even people who are unfamiliar with it will be able to appreciate its charm! Please look forward to it!"
Yuki said, "A work based on TRPG, set in a different world of swords and magic...isn't that the best?! Charlotte, the character I play, is an earnest and honest girl, but she is also easily persuaded (laughs). Her interactions with Yukito are of course a highlight, but personally, her interactions with her beloved horse, Rosinante, are also worth watching. It can be enjoyed by both those who know TRPG and those who don't! I'll be waiting for you in Everworld early!"
Ishikawa said, "Munchkin...are you familiar with this word? As the dubbing progresses, I am feeling the depth of TRPG and the interest of this work how it incorporates that into the story. Rumiria, the character I play, is usually a bit airheaded and doesn't show much emotion, but she cares about her sister and is a strong-willed girl who will do anything to achieve her goals. I would like to play her in a way that is sometimes cute and sometimes cool!"
Maeda commented, "I think it's great how clever Yukito is, as he devises a strategy that will guarantee victory especially when his HP is at its very lowest! Riverna is a very expressive girl, and while she has the dignity of a dark priestess, she is strong-willed but also lovable and cute, which is wonderful! It's also a really great party, so I hope you'll enjoy seeing how everyone changes and fights as a result of Yukito's strategies!"
Director Yumizu Katsura said, "With the cooperation of Shimizu-sensei and Aogiri-sensei, we are taking on various challenges in this film. The original work is filled with thrilling tactics, full-scale battles, the justice and evil of each character, the conflicts of the reincarnated characters, and the fascinating characters... We have been struggling to figure out how to make the audience feel all of these elements within the limited time frame, and having fun making the production. The dynamism that is unique to animation in particular is one of the highlights. I hope you enjoy it!"
Director Fukushi Naoya said, "When an anime is adapted from a original work, it is often thought that 'it wasn't made by someone who loves the original work.' But I promise you that this will absolutely be fine. I am a fan of the manga myself, and I will take utmost care in adapting this important work that has been entrusted to me by Shimizu-sensei and Aogiri-sensei. There are many original elements in the work, but that is where our skills can be put to the test. The team has come together and will complete the work with confidence, so I hope you enjoy the broadcast and streaming!"
The official website for the anime has opened, and a column by TRPG translator and writer Masataka Yanagida has started, "More Fun! Munchkin in Another World." While explaining TRPG, he delves into the TRPG elements scattered throughout the anime.
The manga is currently being serialized on the web manga site "Wednesday Sirius" (Kodansha), and is written by Shimizu and illustrated by Aogiri. The title "Munchkin" refers to a TRPG player who makes full use of the rules, and sometimes even intentionally exploits loopholes in them, to play to his own advantage. Yukito Kirihara (Yukito), a high school student who loves TRPGs, is suddenly attacked by a monster from another world while playing TRPG with his beloved younger sister Sana, and dies an unjust death. He is then given the opportunity to be reincarnated by Nephilia, the goddess of the other world (Everworld). In order to find his precious sister in the other world, Yukito steals the World Master's Guide from Nephilia and is reincarnated as a Munchkin, embarking on an adventure in the harsh other world.
