It has been announced that the first and second volumes of the digital comics for "Captain Tsubasa Rising Sun FINALS," the latest work in the popular soccer manga series "Captain Tsubasa" by Yoichi Takahashi, which is being serialized in storyboard format, will be released in two consecutive months. Volume 1 will be released on January 4th, and Volume 2 on February 4th. The cover illustration for Volume 2, drawn by Takahashi, has been released.
The "Captain Tsubasa" series came to an end in April 2024 after 43 years of serialization as a manga in "Captain Tsubasa Magazine" (Shueisha), but Takahashi decided to continue the series in a new format, a draft format, because he felt that "if I just focus on leaving a story behind, I might be able to leave a vision in my head all the way to the final episode." "Captain Tsubasa Rising Sun FINALS" depicts a story that continues from "Captain Tsubasa Rising Sun." It has been serialized weekly since July 2024 on the series' portal site, "Captain Tsubasa WORLD." It is updated every Tuesday.
It was also announced that a traveling exhibition of the "Captain Tsubasa Original Art Exhibition ~FINAL And Towards the Future!~", which was held at the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store in Tokyo in the summer of 2024, will be held at the Daimaru Museum Umeda in Osaka from February 17th to March 3rd. As an admission bonus, all visitors will receive a booklet containing four stories of the name serialization (No. 1-4).
"Captain Tsubasa" is a manga that depicts the growth of the genius soccer boy Ozora Tsubasa as he battles against unique rivals. A one-off story was published in "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha) in 1980, and the serialization began in the same magazine in 1981, sparking a soccer boom. After depicting Tsubasa's elementary school years through his time as a junior youth player, the series came to an end in 1988. It was then serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump" as "Captain Tsubasa: World Youth Edition," and in "Weekly Young Jump" (same publisher) as "Captain Tsubasa: ROAD TO 2002," "Captain Tsubasa: GOLDEN-23," "Captain Tsubasa: Overseas Fierce Battles IN CALCIO - Giocatore in the Land of the Rising Sun," and "Captain Tsubasa: Overseas Fierce Battles EN LA LIGA," with the setting of the story shifting in line with Tsubasa's growth.
Captain Tsubasa Rising Sun began serialization in Grand Jump (same publisher) in 2013, and moved to Captain Tsubasa Magazine in 2020. The final chapter of the series came to an end in April 2024. The comics have sold over 90 million copies worldwide.
It was adapted into a TV anime series in 1983, 1994, and 2001, and also produced as a movie and a stage play. Season 1 of the new TV anime aired from April 2018 to April 2019, and Season 2, "Junior Youth Arc," aired from October to December 2023.
