It has been revealed that a new anime version of "Obocchama-kun," based on the hit manga by Yoshinori Kobayashi that was popular in the 1990s, will be produced in India. The series has been popular on Indian kids' channels, and there have been calls for a new series. With the consent of the original author, Kobayashi, TV Asahi and Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) have teamed up to jointly produce a new anime series in India and Japan. The new anime series will be 26 episodes of 22 minutes each, and will be broadcast across India next spring. After about 30 years since the anime was broadcast on Japanese TV from 1989 to 1992, the classic comedy anime will be "revived."
The new series will be written by Shin-Ei Animation, the studio behind the Japanese version of "Obocchama-kun," and the anime will be produced in India. Ahead of its broadcast in India, "Obocchama-kun" had its world premiere on October 21 at MIPCOM 2024, one of the world's largest TV and video content events held in Cannes, France. Selected episodes from the new series were screened, and a talk session was also held with SPNI, TV Asahi, and Indian animation studio Green Gold Animation.
"Obocchama-kun" is a comedy manga that depicts the daily life of Chama, the only son of the Obo family, one of the world's most extremely wealthy families. It was serialized in CoroCoro Comic (Shogakukan) from 1986 to 1994. The TV anime aired on TV Asahi from 1989 to 1992, and "Chama-go" (language used to describe Chama) such as "Tomodachi-ko," "Sonna Banana," and "Sumima Sen-en" became popular.
