Actor Kamiki Ryunosuke stars in the October TBS Sunday Theatre drama "Diamonds Sleeping in the Sea" (Sundays at 9pm). The story is about love, friendship and family, set in Hashima Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, which developed through coal mining from the beginning of the Meiji era to the postwar high economic growth period, and in modern-day Tokyo. Sugisaki Hana plays Asako, the reliable girl who is the poster girl of the island's restaurant. She has loved the main character Teppei (Kamiki) since she was a child, but is unable to express her feelings. Sugisaki spoke about her impressions of the role and her enthusiasm for the film.

The story is entertainment that depicts the "era of nothing but dreams and vitality" from the postwar reconstruction period to the high economic growth period, and the "era of today when at first glance there is everything, but young people cannot have dreams." This is a notable work by the "Unnatural" team of screenwriter Nogi Akiko, director Tsukahara Ayuko, and producer Arai Junko.

--Please tell us your impressions after reading the script.

It's not easy for people to care for each other and live side by side, but this story, in which sometimes resentment is resolved and we receive quiet encouragement from the warmth of intangible things such as ties and human feelings, really warmed my heart.

--Please tell us what is appealing about the character of Asako.

I really like Asako, a character who tries to listen carefully to her own true feelings rather than being at the mercy of others. Asako's days as the daughter of a restaurant may be far from "freedom." But she is a rich and lovable character who makes her heart flutter even in the busiest of lives, when she sees flowers blooming on the ground or the beauty of light reflecting off objects.

--What is your impression of Kamiki-san in this film?

This is the seventh time I've co-starred with Kamiki-san, and I already feel like this story has given me the gift of a new view and feel of a new relationship. I have a premonition that with this film, I will be able to sneak into areas I have never reached before... I will do my best to be there to support you and make this a great production.

What was the atmosphere like on set?

It's been a long time since I've seen many staff members, including Producer Arai, Director Tsukahara, and cinematographer Seki Takeshi. It's amazing how happy times like this can come when you keep working steadily. The set was as lively as Hashima, overcoming difficult filming with ease. It's been a long time since I've felt this way, and every day I feel like I'm leafing through an album.

Finally, please tell us your aspirations.

I'll do my best together with all of you wonderful people.
