It has been revealed that Yuki Kaji will be voicing the main character, Joe Shimamura, in "Cyborg 009 Nemesis," a new anime based on Shotaro Ishinomori's popular manga "Cyborg 009."
The voice cast for Nemesis, a group of nine cyborgs who believe that "the 009s alone cannot bring peace to the world," has also been announced. Rina Hidaka will voice N001/Mew, Yoshimasa Hosoya will voice N002/Blizzard, Hiroshi Kamiya will voice N003/Crack, Kikuko Inoue will voice N004/Opro, Tetsu Inada will voice N005/Aspida, Shion Wakayama will voice N006/Blitz, Maaya Uchida will voice N007/Morphin, and Ayane Sakura will voice N008/Depth. A visual featuring all nine members of Nemesis, including N009/Graviton voiced by Yuichi Nakamura, has also been released.
Yuki Kaji, who plays Joe Shimamura, commented on his impressions after reading the original work and script: "Taking on this role allowed me to engage with the work in earnest, and I understood why '009' has been loved for so long across generations. I also strongly feel the significance of re-animating it in this day and age. In this modern age where AI technology is becoming increasingly prominent, the story that depicts 'what it means to be human' resonated deeply with me."
Regarding Joe Shimamura, she said, "His honest and straightforward thinking, kindness and compassion. I think it's because he knows weakness and pain that he can reach out to others. I love his humanity, including his sometimes overly strong sense of justice. I feel like there are parts of him that are similar to myself, and at the same time, he's someone I admire and want to be like."
He sent a message to the fans saying, "I am deeply honored and delighted to have been able to participate as the voice actor for Joe Shimamura in this important work marking the 60th anniversary of its creation. I hope that not only fans of the series, but also those who are experiencing '009' for the first time through this work will enjoy it."
"Cyborg 009" is a manga that depicts the story of nine warriors, including Joe Shimamura, who are turned into cyborgs by the evil organization Black Ghost, and their fight for justice alongside Dr. Gilmore. The series began serialization in "Weekly Shonen King" (Shonen Gahosha) in 1964 and was also serialized in "Shonen Sunday" (Shogakukan) and "Monthly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha). In 2024, it celebrated its 60th anniversary, and in the same year, it was adapted into a stage play for the first time and remade as a vertical-reading full-color comic.
"Cyborg 009 Nemesis" will be released in the summer of 2026.
