It has been revealed that a sequel to the popular drama series " A Calm Sea and Beautiful Days with You " (Fuji TV), in which actors Kyoko Yoshine and Kyoya Honda played a newlywed couple in the early Showa era, will be broadcast in the fall of 2026.
" A Calm Sea and Beautiful Days with You" is based on the manga of the same name by Nishika Hachi (serialized in Kodansha's "Comic DAYS"), which has sold over 2.5 million copies. Set in 1936, the drama depicts the bittersweet and frustratingly sweet newlywed life of the protagonist, Ebata Natsumi (Yoshine), and her husband, Ebata Takimasa (Honda), who works for the Imperial Japanese Navy. The drama has become a hot topic for its "innocent and heart-fluttering" feel, and has trended on social media with every broadcast. Honda's portrayal of "Takimasa-sama" has garnered overwhelming popularity, and the drama has also received accolades such as the "Tokyo Drama Awards 2025" and the "Filmarks Awards 2025".
The sequel is set in 1937, the year after the first film. Natsumi and Takimasa remain as innocent and awkward as ever, but viewers will also get to see new sides of them as they've grown over the years they've spent together.
Upon hearing of the decision to produce the sequel, Yoshine commented, "I've been waiting impatiently, secretly hoping for it (laughs). This is my first experience with a sequel, so it feels like I'm jumping into a completely unknown world." Reflecting on the previous film, she said, "That filming period was truly a happy time. We put our feelings of 'Send out our love!' into it, and everyone returned that love with great love through social media and other means. I'm so excited to think that I'll be able to experience those days again, when we were able to play catch with love like that."
They further added, "First and foremost, we feel most strongly that we want to say, 'Thank you for waiting!' I myself don't know the details of what the story will be like yet, but we can guarantee that you'll experience that same 'innocent and heart-fluttering' feeling! We're really pumping ourselves up (laughs). We want to come back even stronger, without forgetting the passion we had back then, and deliver another wonderful time to everyone." They spoke of their aspirations for the sequel.
Honda, on the other hand, expressed his joy, saying, "This is a very important and beloved work that has allowed me to grow both as an actor and as a person. I am very excited to be able to live the story after that final episode again." Honda revealed, "Actually, I was one of those who were experiencing 'Meoto-biyori loss' along with everyone else (laughs)," and commented on his feelings about the sequel, saying, "As we enter a period of great upheaval globally, I am excited and a little nervous to see how those waves will affect Natsumi, Takimasa, and their family." He added, "I'm sure that when I put on that military uniform again, my posture will straighten up. I will do my best to live up to expectations, cherishing the atmosphere of 'Meoto Biyori' that everyone wants to see, so please look forward to seeing how the two of them will return."
The sequel to "A Calm Sea and Beautiful Days with You" is scheduled to air in the fall of 2026.

--What were your feelings when you heard that a sequel was being made?
Every time the award was announced on social media, we received so many messages from everyone saying, "We're waiting for a sequel," and I felt the same way, secretly hoping and eagerly awaiting it (laughs). This is my first experience with a "sequel," so it feels like I'm jumping into a completely unknown world. I'm excited, but also a little nervous about whether everyone will accept it as well as the first one, so I'm feeling a bit lightheaded right now. But that filming period was truly a happy time. We poured our hearts into it, saying "Send our love!", and everyone returned that love with great love through social media and other means. The thought of being able to experience those days again, when we were able to "catch and throw" love like that, makes my heart race.
--Looking back on the previous season's broadcast, what are your thoughts?
It's been exactly a year since the show aired last April, but I'm still amazed by the unwavering enthusiasm of so many people who send me their thoughts and impressions as if it were just yesterday. That's truly a wonderful thing. Actually, filming the previous series was a tough time, but it was only because of everyone's support that I was able to stand there and persevere. I believe that this was a project I was able to complete thanks to all of you, so I'm happy to be able to repay your kindness in this new way.

First and foremost, I feel a strong sense of "Thank you for waiting!" I myself don't know the details of the story yet, but I can assure you that it will have that same "innocent and heart-fluttering" feeling! We're really pumped up ourselves (laughs). We want to come back even stronger, without forgetting the passion we had back then, and deliver another wonderful time to everyone. And since it's not too late... (laughs), please share any scenes or episodes from the original work that you would like to see, using the hashtag "#MeotoBiyori". We would be delighted if you would remember to wait until the fall broadcast. Thank you!

--What were your feelings when you heard that a sequel was being made?
Last year, wherever I went, people would say things like, "I saw 'Meoto Biyori'," and "It was really good," so I received a tremendous amount of positive feedback. It's a very important and beloved work for me, as it helped me grow both as an actor and as a person. I'm incredibly excited to be able to live the story that takes place after that final episode.
--Looking back on the previous season's broadcast, what are your thoughts?
When the show was airing, we received many comments like, "Watching this drama gives me energy every day," and we were encouraged by those words and used them to our advantage while we were filming. I feel that there was a wonderful synergistic effect where everyone's voices became energy on set. Even recently, there are people who rewatch it on streaming services, and I feel truly honored as an actor to think that we were able to create a work that will remain in people's hearts for a long time. I was also very happy every time it trended on social media, and actually, I was one of those who felt "meoto-loss" along with everyone else (laughs), so I am truly happy that a sequel has been decided.

I loved the characters who, despite feeling the threat of war in the background, cherished the small joys of everyday life, realizing they weren't something to be taken for granted. The previous film was set in 1936, and the next one will be set in 1937. As the world enters a period of great upheaval, I'm excited to see how those waves will affect Natsumi, Takimasa, and their family. I myself feel a mix of anticipation and nervousness. And when I put on that military uniform again, I'm sure my posture will straighten up. I will do my best to live up to expectations, cherishing the atmosphere of "Meoto Biyori" that everyone wants to see, so please look forward to seeing how the two of them return.

A Calm Sea and Beautiful Days with You" has been greenlit. We are deeply grateful for the warm support we have received from everyone, which has made this decision possible. In the previous series, we depicted the small joys and inexpressible feelings found in everyday life through the time spent by the married couple (Natsumi and Takimasa). In the sequel, as the two move to the "next stage as a married couple," we hope to depict "living together" more deeply and warmly through changes in their environment and new encounters. We hope to convey to everyone once again the preciousness and wavering of being together, even amidst the gradually changing days. Being a married couple is not the finish line, but something that is "re-chosen" many times in daily life. We will carefully weave together that time, continuing to communicate carefully with the original author, Nishika Hachi, who kindly agreed to the sequel to this work. Please look forward to the broadcast in the fall of 2026!
