Playwright and film director Yuichi Fukuda appeared at the opening lineup announcement for the new theater "EX Theater Ariake" within the "Tokyo Dream Park" multi-purpose entertainment complex opening in Ariake, Tokyo on March 27th, on March 25th. There, he was exposed for making an offer that was "forbidden in the industry."
Director Fukuda will be directing the musical "Monty Python's SPAMALOT," which will be performed at the same venue in January 2027. The musical is a Broadway production that members of the British national comedy group Monty Python, including Eric Idle, have affectionately "ripped off" the 1975 comedy film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," which is based on the legend of King Arthur. This will be the fourth time the musical has been performed in Japan, with Takanori Iwata starring as King Arthur.
Iwata, who is taking on a musical for the first time, revealed how he got the role, saying, "It came as a complete surprise. Despite having no experience, I received a direct offer about two years ago. Director Fukuda messaged me on LINE asking, 'Are you interested in musicals?' and when I said yes, he sent me the schedule in the next LINE message (laughs)." Director Fukuda chuckled, "That's the worst thing you can do. Offering someone directly without going through their agency." Iwata responded enthusiastically, "Now that I've decided to do it, I intend to jump in headfirst and do my best."
On this day, the cast and production staff who will grace the opening year took to the stage. Director Fukuda, after seeing Hidenori Inoue, the director of the Gekidan Shinkansen production "Akechiko! ~The Black Diamond of Steam, or the Island of Madness~" which will be performed in June and July, and cast member Arata Furuta, said, "How can we compete with Gekidan Shinkansen in terms of 'absurdity'? Only SPAMALOT can compete. This time, I have gathered the best comedians I can think of, so I will pursue absurd comedy so as not to lose to Gekidan Shinkansen."
Furuta, who had previously seen "Monty Python's SPAMALOT," directed by Fukuda, gave it his seal of approval, saying, "'SPAMALOT' is really stupid. You should check it out. I want you to leave Ariake thinking, 'Ah, that's stupid.'"
