"Japan Exploration Academic Variety: Tuesday's Yoshizumi Kotaro" (Tuesdays at 7 PM), a TV Asahi variety show hosted by Yoshizumi Ishihara and Kotaro Koizumi, explores the wonders of various famous places in Japan, including World Heritage sites and hidden gems. In the 3-hour special airing on March 24th, they will delve into the secrets of Shibuya, Tokyo.
This time, we're embarking on a journey to trace the Shibuya River, which can be considered the origin of Shibuya, all the way back to its source. We'll board a boat near Hamasaki Bridge, close to Tokyo Bay, and travel upstream along the Shibuya River, which is approximately 10 kilometers long.
The two were initially excited, but near Ninobashi in Azabu-Juban, the water became extremely shallow and their boat ran aground. As they had to make their way through the muddy water on foot, a series of accidents occurred, including Yoshizumi nearly falling and the camera being submerged.
Eventually, it was discovered that the Shibuya River was covered over about 7 kilometers from its mouth. With special permission, the two infiltrated an area normally off-limits. What they saw inside that massive tunnel, and when they reached the "true source" of the Shibuya River, it turned out to be the grounds of a "super famous landmark" that every Tokyo resident knows.
