In Japan, he was forced to choose between dialysis and a kidney transplant, and decided to accept a kidney from his wife, Chie. The operation was successful, and he expressed his joy, saying, "My wife is now inside my body."
Umemiya was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma, a rare cancer, last year and underwent surgery. She says that the treatment has been established and she has been able to fight the disease with a positive attitude. Her daughter, who lives in the United States, returned to Japan and told her, "I'm with you, Mommy," which was reassuring.
