It has been announced that a new series of "Doctor Y: Surgeon Kaji Hideki" (TV Asahi), a spin-off of the popular medical drama series "Doctor X: Surgeon Daimon Michiko" (TV Asahi), starring actor Katsumura Masanobu, will be broadcast as a two-hour special from 9:00 pm to 10:54 pm on November 30th, the first in about three years. This is the seventh installment to commemorate the release of the final film in the series, "Doctor X: The Movie," on December 6th. This will be the first appearance by Nishihata Daigo and Oikawa Mitsuhiro of "Naniwa Danshi."
"Doctor Y," which began in 2016, centers on surgeon Kaji Hideki (Katsumura), who is so skilled that he is revered as the "laparoscopy magician," but who likes to be in a group, loves money, and has some disappointing aspects as a person. In the second series (2017), Kaji was involved in a ghost scandal, and in the third series (2018), he suffered a major defeat in the professor election. After that, he was forced into a corner many times due to a secret child scandal and a surgical mistake, but he has risen like a phoenix many times. However, this time, he falls into debt hell.
In Singapore, Kaji takes the biggest gamble of his life, and loses spectacularly, even squandering the funds of Totei University Hospital. Furthermore, he receives a request from a certain person, with the condition that he will pay off a large debt, to "not make Higashimura Ren (Nishihata), a medical student doing clinical training at Totei University Hospital, a doctor," with an unclear meaning.
Tomura, who also appears in the "Doctor X" movie, has excellent grades but a terrible attitude. In order to carry out the request, Kaji approaches the arrogant Higashimura, but is trashed. Oikawa plays Kusuda Eigo, Higashimura's father and the key character in the story. When Kaji finds out that Higashimura and Kusuda are related by blood, despite their different surnames, a memory from 18 years ago that he had suppressed is brought back to his mind.
As in previous episodes, the main cast of "Doctor X" will appear, led by Yonekura Ryoko, to liven up the story. Nishida Toshiyuki, who passed away on October 17th, will also appear. There will also be a mahjong scene, a specialty of "Doctor X," in which an unexpected past connection between Daimon Michiko (Yonekura), Kanbara Akira (Kishibe Ittoku), and Kusuda (played by Oikawa) is revealed.
Katsumura, the main star, commented on the broadcast of the seventh series, "It's been more than 10 years since Doctor X was created, and I turned 60 last year. I'm deeply moved that I'll still be playing Doctor Y after turning 60, and it feels like a dream, so I'm very excited."
Addressing the viewers, he said, "This time, all the cast members who read the script unanimously said they were moved. The director and I were even worried, wondering, 'Is it okay to make people feel moved by Doctor Y?' (laughs). It's a wonderful story with a different flavor from the previous works, which were overwhelmingly comedic, and I'm honestly surprised! I hope everyone will enjoy this new Doctor Y."
