It was announced on December 13th that the 33rd film in the popular anime series "Crayon Shin-chan," the latest installment, "Crayon Shin-chan chan: Strange and Mysterious! My Yokai Vacation," will be released in the summer of 2026. The story is set in "Yokai Land," where the Nohara family, who were supposed to be traveling to Hiroshi's hometown of Akita to see the Omagari fireworks festival, a summer tradition in Akita Prefecture, end up getting lost in Yokai Land and embarking on an unpredictable adventure in this mysterious world.
Masaki Watanabe, who has been directing the TV anime series since 2022 and storyboarding and directing parts of the "Crayon Shin-chan Movie" series since 2024, will be directing the film series for the first time. Yoshiko Nakamura, who has worked on the screenplay for the TV series, will be in charge of the script.
A super teaser visual has been released, depicting Shinnosuke looking up at the night sky and colorful "Yokai Fireworks." It is accompanied by the tagline, "A fun and mysterious encounter." An icon of "Tengu Shinnosuke" dressed in a Tengu costume has also been released.
Director Watanabe commented, "Crayon Shin-chan the Movie is one of Japan's most iconic animations. I feel both the pressure and the deep emotion of taking over as director. This time, the story is set in the Land of Yokai, where Japan's original landscape remains, and Shinnosuke, who has become a Tengu, plays a big role! The Nohara family meets various yokai, and as always, chaotic and exciting developments await. I would be happy if you would come to the theater to see the Nohara family's great summer adventure!"
Nakamura said, "I feel that we live in an age where many things change in the blink of an eye compared to when I was a child. 'Some things were better in the old days, but the same is true now. And I'm sure things will continue to be the same in the future.' With this wish in mind, I was nervous as I wrote the script for the ' Crayon Shin-chan the Movie' for the first time. I hope everyone will enjoy this mysterious adventure together with Shinnosuke!"
Kobayashi Yumiko, the voice actor for Nohara Shinnosuke, said, "The new Crayon Shin-chan chan movie is about some kind of monster? That's right...!! It's a monster x Shin-chan story you've never seen before! Set in Dad's hometown of Akita, all kinds of monsters that everyone knows go on a rampage alongside Shin-chan! What a strange story of monsters and Shin-chan that unfolds there...!! I can't wait until I can spend a mysterious and fun summer with Shinnosuke with everyone! Please look forward to it!"
The first film in the Crayon Shin-chan series, "Crayon Shin-chan -chan: Action Kamen vs. the High-Heeled Demon King," was released in 1993. The first full-length 3DCG animation in the series' history, "Shin-Den! Crayon Shin-chan Crayon Shin-chan -chan: The Movie: Psychic Showdown ~Tobe Tobe Hand-Rolled Sushi~," was released in 2023, which also garnered attention. "Crayon Shin-chan: Our Dinosaur Diary," released in 2024 (directed by Shinobu Sasaki), grossed over 2.5 billion yen, breaking the all-time box office record for the film series. "Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Hot! The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers" (directed by Masakazu Hashimoto), set in India, was released this year.
