A screening with YamaTalk for the third chapter of the latest installment of the remake series of the popular anime series Space Battleship Yamato, "Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199," titled "Ultramarine Asteroid," was held at Shinjuku Piccadilly (Shinjuku, Tokyo) on April 22. Titled the "CG Edition," the event featured general director Harutoshi Fukui, director Naomichi Yamato, screenwriter Hideki Oka, and CG director Masahiro Uechi, who spoke about the behind-the-scenes aspects of CG production.
Uechi, who has also participated in "Space Battleship Yamato 2199," "Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Ark of the Celestial Bodies," and "The Age of Space Battleship Yamato Space Battleship Yamato: Choices in the Year 2202," said that one thing he values in the visual expression of the "Space Battleship Yamato" remake series is "expressing the exaggerated nature of Yamato."
He said that "weight is particularly important," and added, "If you only express weight, the sense of speed is lost, which is difficult. Most of the CG staff are young, so we start by explaining it to them." Fukui expressed his gratitude to the CG team, saying, "The sense of weight is amazing. The shading is different. You can understand the weight from the shading and timing. They even helped us with the parts that we filmed."
When asked about the highlights of the CG in Chapter 3, Uechi commented, “The scene where the omnidirectional radar room is started up. Yamato is a mass of settings. It was difficult to draw the walls. It was an irregular cut that we don’t usually do in Yamato.”
Fukui praised the fight, saying, "The battle between the Grodes and Yamato's rocket anchor. I've always wanted to do that. 3199 places great importance on the movement of the thrusters. The thrusters are the ones doing the acting." Uechi smiled and said, "That was good."
Yamato said, "It's a wave motion gun scene. It's not shown straightforwardly. It was a very difficult thing to do," and Uechi said, "There were a lot of effects." It seems there were many difficulties. Oka nodded and said, "You're at the bottom of a plasma ocean. The fluctuations are wonderful. It's a great finish," and Uechi revealed, "I was imagining the ocean."
"Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199" is a new interpretation of the third movie, "Be Forever Yamato," released in 1980. Harutoshi Fukui is the general director, and is also in charge of the series composition and scriptwriting. Fukui was in charge of the series composition and scriptwriting for the remake series "Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love" and "Space Battleship Yamato 2205: A New Voyage," and will also be the general director for the latest film. There are seven chapters in total, with the fourth chapter, "Sasha, the Light Blue Maiden," set to premiere on October 10.
The first Space Battleship Yamato anime series was broadcast in 1974, and other films have since been produced, including Space Battleship Yamato 2, Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato , Warriors of Love, and Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection. A remake of the first film, Space Battleship Yamato 2199, was screened in theaters and broadcast on TV from 2012 to 2014, and a sequel to 2199, 2202, was screened in theaters and broadcast on TV from 2017 to 2019. A two-part series, 2205, was screened in theaters in 2021 and 2022.
