Ayaka Wada, a former member of the idol group Angerme, updated her Instagram account (@ayaka.wada.official) on April 17th to announce that she had gotten married in Taiwan.
Wada announced in a post titled "An Announcement" that she had gotten married in Taiwan. She wrote, "We chose to get married in Taiwan, my partner's home country, because we have always supported same-sex marriage and because it is possible to choose to keep separate surnames for married couples. In Taiwan, both can be freely realized." She added, "We feel that getting married in Taiwan, where such systems exist, is closer to the ideal form we had envisioned."
She continued, "In my case, since it's an international marriage, I can choose to keep my own surname even in Japan, but I want everyone who desires it, not just me, to be able to live the life they want. I hope that optional separate surnames for married couples and same-sex marriage will be realized here in Japan as soon as possible. When everyone is able to live the life they want, I would be happy if we could all say 'Congratulations' together."
Wada was born on August 1, 1994, and is 31 years old and from Gunma Prefecture. In 2009, she was selected as an original member of "S/mileage," the idol group that would later become Angerme, and was appointed as its leader. On June 18, 2019, she graduated from Angerme and the Hello! Project to which she belonged.
