The latest episode of TV Asahi's special "Tamori Station," which is hosted by Tamori and delves into a variety of topics, will be broadcast on March 7th from 8:00 pm to 9:48 pm. The theme this time is the Nankai Trough Earthquake, which is said to have an 80% chance of occurring within the next 30 years. In the worst case scenario, experts will examine how we should deal with a mega-earthquake that is estimated to kill 320,000 people, about 17 times the number of people killed in the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Tamori leaves the studio and heads to Kochi Prefecture, where strong shaking and devastating tsunami damage are expected. He walks around the town and listens to the voices of the people of Kochi Prefecture to find out how they are facing the risk of a Nankai Trough earthquake.
The first place they visited was Kuroshio Town, which is said to be "the most dangerous town in Japan" with a maximum tsunami height of 34.4 meters. The town has six tsunami evacuation towers in preparation for tsunamis, and Tamori climbed one of them, the tallest tsunami evacuation tower in Japan, which was built in the Hamacho district. Tamori was impressed by the thoughtful facilities, including a ramp to allow wheelchair users to evacuate without confusion, and a "descent shooter" on the seventh floor in case the first floor becomes blocked by earth and sand. They also explored how the construction of the towers and evacuation routes has changed the disaster prevention awareness of the townspeople.
We also heard that Kuroshio Town has a new disaster prevention industry that was born because it is the "most dangerous town in Japan," and we visited the factory. Kuroshio Town, which already had few employment opportunities and population outflow problems, saw its population decline further due to reports of the Nankai Trough earthquake. In order to stop this, even if only a little, an emergency food canning factory was established.
In Muroto City, they visit the only tsunami evacuation shelter in Japan, and also go to Cape Muroto, where important clues for predicting "when an earthquake will hit" are said to be hidden. There, Tamori is shocked to find surprising evidence that supports the data that says there is an 80% chance of an earthquake occurring within the next 30 years.
The program will also analyze the panic that would be caused by a Nankai Trough earthquake from various angles. The drama will depict the difficulties that a family of three living in an apartment in the Kansai region will face immediately after the earthquake in a hypothetical scenario. It will also focus on the dangers of concern in the Tokyo metropolitan area and the "shukuryu" tsunami that will hit cities, and with the help of expert commentary, students will learn about the measures that should be taken now.
Studio guests include actress Yoshino Kimura, Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo and chairman of the Nankai Trough Earthquake Assessment Committee and leading earthquake researcher Nao Hirata, disaster prevention and preparedness advisor Tomoya Takanashi, and Professor Taro Arikawa of Chuo University, a leading researcher in tsunamis that strike cities. The program assistant will be announcer Ruby Watanabe.
