Nippon Television's "Friday Road Show" (Fridays at 9 PM) will air Studio Ghibli films for three consecutive weeks starting August 7th, under the title "Three Weeks of Ghibli in Summer!!" "The Arrietty" (directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, 2010) will air on August 7th, "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" (directed by Hayao Miyazaki, 1984) on August 14th, and "My Neighbor Totoro" (directed by Miyazaki, 1988) on August 21st, all uncut. The broadcast time for "The Arrietty" will be extended by 5 minutes, and the broadcast time for "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" will be extended by 30 minutes.
"The Arrietty" is based on Mary Norton's novel "The Borrowers." Hayao Miyazaki handled the planning and screenplay, and it was Hiromasa Yonebayashi's directorial debut. The Arrietty family, tiny people who live under the floorboards of an old mansion and "borrow" what they need from humans, have a rule that they must never be seen by humans. However, the curious Arrietty girl is seen by Sho, a boy who has come to the house to recuperate from an illness. A strange bond develops between Arrietty and Sho, but their interaction brings danger to the Arrietty family.
Mirai Shida voiced Arrietty, Ryunosuke Kamiki Sho, Tomokazu Miura voiced Arrietty's strict father Pod, and Shinobu Otake voiced her anxious mother Homily. Keiko Takeshita, Kirin Kiki, and Tatsuya Fujiwara also appeared as voice actors.
"Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" is set in a post-apocalyptic world covered by a fungal forest called the Sea of Corruption, and depicts the adventures of Nausicaä, a young girl who lives in the Valley of the Wind. The voice cast included Sumi Shimamoto, Goro Naya, Yoji Matsuda, Ichiro Nagai, Yoshiko Sakakibara, and Iemasa Kayumi.
"My Neighbor Totoro" is set in the lush, rural Japanese countryside before the period of rapid economic growth, and depicts the interactions between the responsible older sister Satsuki and her spoiled younger sister Mei with the mysterious creature Totoro. The voice cast included Noriko Hidaka, Chinatsu Sakamoto, Shigesato Itoi, and Shimamoto.
